Howdy,

It has been a strange coupla weeks around here. On 10/20, I had a work issue to deal with and had to have Bob Dubrow cover the show. (Thanks, Bob!) Last week, the 27th, I had my final 2010 pledger do his radio show so I didn't really do the show myself. This Thursday, the 3rd, is my day for fundraising. I hope y'all will call in or via the internets and donate to my show or just the station in general. All pledgers to my show will receive a special premium that won't be announced on the air. All? Yup, all. Even if you pledge $5.00 you'll get the special Thursday Lost and Found premium. I just won't be talking about it...so consider yourself in the know. Funk legend Sly Stone now homeless and living out of a van in LA

In his heyday, he lived at 783 Bel Air Road, a four-bedroom, 5,432-square-foot Beverly Hills mansion that once belonged to John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas.

The Tudor-style house was tricked out in his signature funky black, white and red color scheme. Shag carpet. Tiffany lamps in every room. A round water bed in the master bedroom. There were parties where Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Miles Davis would drop by, where Etta James would break into “At Last” by the bar.

Just four years ago, he resided in a Napa Valley house so large it could only be described as a “compound,” with a vineyard out back and multiple cars in the driveway.
But those days are gone.

Today, Sly Stone -- one of the greatest figures in soul-music history -- is homeless, his fortune stolen by a lethal combination of excess, substance abuse and financial mismanagement. He lays his head inside a white camper van ironically stamped with the words “Pleasure Way” on the side. The van is parked on a residential street in Crenshaw, the rough Los Angeles neighborhood where “Boyz n the Hood” was set. A retired couple makes sure he eats once a day, and Stone showers at their house. The couple’s son serves as his assistant and driver.

Inside the van, the former mastermind of Sly & the Family Stone, now 68, continues to record music with the help of a laptop computer.

“I like my small camper,” he says, his voice raspy with age and years of hard living. “I just do not want to return to a fixed home. I cannot stand being in one place. I must keep moving.”

Stone has been difficult to pin down for years. In the last two decades, he’s become one of music’s most enigmatic figures, bordering on reclusive. You’d be forgiven for assuming he’s dead. He rarely appears in public, and just getting him in a room requires hours or years of detective work, middlemen and, of course, making peace with the likelihood that he just won’t show up.

There was a time when Sly was difficult to escape. Stone, whose real name is Sylvester Stewart, was one of the most visible, flamboyant figures of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The multiracial, multi-gender band that Stone assembled fused funk, soul and psychedelic rock and became one of the most influential acts ever. The San Fran-based group released a string of hits beginning with the 1968 album “Dance to the Music,” followed by “Everyday People,” “Family Affair,” “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” and “Stand!”

The group’s costumes and showmanship were just as memorable. The members favored giant afros, flashy capes, Beatle boots, neon vests and leopard-print jumpsuits.

Stone learned to sing in church as a child. He grew up in a middle-class, Christian household in Vallejo, Calif., and he and three of his siblings sang in a gospel group. As a young man, he studied music at a local junior college and worked as a soul disc jockey at a local radio station. He played in several bands with his brother, Fred, a guitarist.

The lineup of Sly & the Family Stone, which included Fred and sister Vet, solidified in 1966. The band’s energetic live shows, positive lyrics and diverse membership earned it buzz in the Bay Area, and the Family was signed by CBS Records.

Appearances on shows like “Music Scene” and “The Ed Sullivan Show” soon followed, and in the summer of ’69, at the peak of their power, they managed to turn what should have been a snoozy middle-of-the-night slot at Woodstock into one of the highlights of the festival. As the band began to play, tens of thousands of people creeped out of their sleeping bags to watch. They left the stage with the audience still roaring, “Higher!”

And then the inevitable cracks began to appear. Sly moved to Los Angeles while the rest of the band remained in the Bay Area. He started hanging around with unsavory characters. There were whispers of cocaine and PCP abuse, Mafia connections and guns being pulled on people.

Things got dark. Stone started missing rehearsals and even performances. In 1970, he failed to show up at 26 of the band’s 80 gigs and quickly developed a reputation as mercurial.

“There were these people that say I had to pay a $50,000 bond, so if I’m late, they keep the money, right?” Stone says. “It seemed that people saw to it that I was gonna be late, and I get there, and this promoter ran out and started shouting, ‘You gonna be late again? F--k you! We don’t need that s--t, man!’ I’m thinking about music, and the only time when I can play is when I am happy. So I just leave.”

Sly & the Family Stone began to fall apart. Drummer Greg Errico and bassist Larry Graham (who’s credited with creating the much-imitated slap-bass sound) bolted in the early 1970s, and by 1975 the group called it quits.

Drugs took a tighter hold. One night close to Christmas, Stone headed out to buy presents for his young son, Sylvester, whom he had with Kathy Silva, a model he married on stage at Madison Square Garden in 1974.

“I had about $2,500 to spend,” Stone recalls. “By the time I get [to the store], I had spent it all on drugs. Yes, I did. And when I getting close to little Syl’s house, I thought, ‘Oooh, man. I never should have done that.’ When I saw him, I said, ‘I spent your money up on drugs. I spend it up on dope.’ ”

Over the years, Stone has dropped tens of thousands of dollars on his other hobby: automobiles. In his early days, he drove a Jaguar XKE he painted purple. There were Hummers, a London taxi and a beloved Studebaker, which Stone asked to have painted in exchange for this interview. (The Post declined.) A few years ago, he would cruise around LA on a bright-yellow, custom three-wheel chopper. He was known to give cars to friends.

By 1980, the group’s popularity had declined enormously from its heyday. Stone appeared on an episode of “The Mike Douglas Show” and promised, “I’m going to do one more album real quick, and if it’s not instantly platinum, bye-bye.” Sly & the Family Stone’s 10th and final album, 1982’s “Ain’t But the One Way,” flopped.

Stone kept his word and mostly vanished. He was arrested a few times in the 1980s for cocaine possession and performed sporadically, but his days of sold-out shows and magazine covers were gone. A 1987 performance would prove to be his last for 19 years.

He finally reappeared during a 2006 Grammy tribute, shuffling on stage, his posture hunched and his neck bent as a result of a fall he suffered at his home. He arrived midway through a medley of his classic hits, played the keyboard and sang for a few bars, waved, then inexplicably left the stage before the song concluded.

Today, Sly is disheveled, paranoid -- the FBI is after him; his enemies have hired hit men. He refuses to let The Post into his camper, but, ever the showman, poses flamboyantly with a silver military helmet and a Taser in front of his Studebaker.

The singer claims his money troubles escalated in 2009, when his royalty payments stopped flowing after Stone accused his manager, Jerry Goldstein, of fraud. Stone says he was tricked into signing a rotten contract with Goldstein in 1989, giving the manager control of his finances in exchange for a weekly paycheck.

Last year, Stone sued Goldstein for $50 million, alleging fraud and 20 years of stolen royalty payments. (Contributing to the singer’s dire financial situation, he foolishly sold his valuable music-publishing rights to Michael Jackson for a reported $1 million in 1984.)
Goldstein did not return calls seeking comment.

The performer’s cash-flow problems forced him out of his Napa Valley house that he rented with money from a 2007 European tour and into cheap hotels and the van in 2009. Stone hopes to soon put the lawsuit and his other woes behind him.

“My music is a format that will encourage you to have a song you won’t forget. That’s why I got so much money, that there are so many people around, and that’s why I am in court. Millions of dollars!” Stone says. “But now please tell everybody, please, to give me a job, play my music. I’m tired of all this s--t, man.”

Earlier this year, Stone released an album of his hits re-recorded with other artists. Stone has new songs, but he no longer trusts record companies or managers and is wary about making a deal to release another album. He works constantly on new music, often staying up for two days straight, then sleeping for the next two. (In a nice piece of symmetry, some of his 1971 album, “There’s a Riot Goin’ On,” was recorded in a Winnebago.) He has hundreds of new tracks recorded in his van that he keeps for himself. For now, at least.

“But, with new energy, it will feel good to step on stage,” he says. “I see all the guys playing those old songs. Let these guys know, like Lady Gaga, let me come in, just let me come in and pay me if you like it.

He and Valerie Simpson had a major impact on Gamble & Huff's songwriting career, as Nick was responsible for producing a song we wrote, ‘I’m Gonna Make You Love Me,’ with Motown. Nick heard the song after we wrote it for Dee Dee Warwick and made it a major hit for Diana Ross and the Supremes and the Temptations together. We also worked with Ashford & Simpson on ‘Is It Still Good to You,’ which they wrote for Teddy Pendergrass, and they did an excellent job. Gene McDaniels, at 76; soared up charts as versatile singer, writer of Roberta Flack hit

NEW YORK - Eugene McDaniels, whose mellifluous voice brought him high onto the Billboard charts several times in the early 1960s and who later wrote “Feel Like Makin’ Love,’’ which Roberta Flack took to the top of the charts in 1974, died Friday at his home in Kittery Point, Maine. He was 76.

With his four-octave range, Gene McDaniels, as he was first professionally known, hit number three in the spring of 1961 with “A Hundred Pounds of Clay’’ and number five later that year with “Tower of Strength.’’ He last hit the Top 40 with “Spanish Lace’’ in late 1962.

Mr. McDaniels’s songs, including those he wrote for other artists later in his career, jumped from jazz to blues to ballads to gospel and could be laced with cultural criticism and political protest.

The lyrics of his bluesy up-tempo song “Compared to What,’’ recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1969 by the pianist and singer Les McCann and the saxophonist Eddie Harris, include:

“The president, he’s got his war Folks don’t know just what it’s for Nobody gives us rhyme or reason Have one doubt, they call it treason’’ After hitting number one in 1974, Flack’s rendition of Mr. McDaniels’s swooning “Feel Like Makin’ Love’’ (“Strollin’ in the park/Watchin’ winter turn to spring/Walking in the dark seein’ lovers do their thing’’) was nominated for a Grammy. It has since been covered by numerous artists. Eugene Booker McDaniels was born in Kansas City, Kan., to Booker and Louise McDaniels. The family later moved to Omaha, where his father was a minister. He sang in the church choir, became enthralled by jazz, attended the Omaha Conservatory of Music, and moved to Los Angeles when he was 19. There he began performing jazz as a solo singer before meeting and performing with his jazz idol, McCann. That led to his signing with Liberty Records. Later in his career, Mr. McDaniels became a producer for, among others, organist Jimmy Smith and singers Nancy Wilson and Merry Clayton. Mr. McDaniels’s first two marriages ended in divorce. Besides his wife, the former Karen Thompson, he leaves five sons, Dylan Patterson, London, Christopher, Django, and Mateo; a daughter, Dali; a sister, Patricia Nichols; and nine grandchildren. Although Mr. McDaniels was absent from the charts as a performer after the early 1960s, his writing continued to leave its mark. His songs “have substantial melodies and rich, useful harmonies,’’ Don Heckman wrote in The New York Times in 1970, adding that it was “difficult to think of any other composer since Bob Dylan who has managed so well to find musical expression for the swirling cultural currents that envelop us.’’

Hello to the 13 of you who check in on a regular basis. This year for fundrasing, which starts a week from Thursday, I am offering--assuming there are at least 6 of you interested--in a CD club for a pledge of $250. If you pledge that amount, you will receive during the course of the year 6 CDs handpicked by me. Every two months, a new disc will arrive in your mailbox. Sometimes it might be a classic soul band, a new reissue, a found record of the week, or who knows what else?!? It is pricey but it will be worth it as you will be supporting the station, my show, and discovering music you might've missed delivered right to your door. It is a win-win. And if you've ever seen them live, you know how effortlessly they can transport you there, like well-dressed deep soul time travelers. Director Philip Di Fiore captured this phenomenon in a three-part short film, which we have here for the first time in it's entirety, "Game Gets Old: the Trilogy."

Feast on that below and then read the chat I had with Sharon Jones over the phone while she was in Queens with her Mom -- we had to put our conversation on hold more than once while Jones took care of business and looked after her Mom's health. It's plain that she's still struggling after all these years but she and independent Brooklyn label, Daptone, have come very far sticking to their guns. We talked about that, along with Martin Luther King, how the Dap-Kings would never touch Auto-Tune, and this dreamy memory she has of seeing James Brown perform in a little club in 1969.

You might remember me from the old days, when I was booking you up in Milwaukee, back in like '03, just before you guys started really blowing up outside of NY. You've come a long way since then.
You know, we did so many shows, but yeah. Yeah, one of the first ones that got us out there, get us started in the Midwest, and then stuff started happening. Oh, yes we finally, we've come a long way. And we still have a long way to go, but yeah. Thank you.

Back then you guys were cutting 45's like "Make it Good to Me" that I still keep right next to the turntable, it's so good. How has your sound changed since then?
Yeah, I haven't sang that song in a long time, too! [laugh] I think, we've changed over the years, from 2003 to now, definitely changed. The band has gotten stronger. The band has gotten tighter. Because, at that time, the drummer was still messing up beats, still learning how to hold a beat, you know? [laughter] And I mean, I remember the first two years, it took him a while, you know, to get the hang of things. So um, yeah, I think we've come along a little bit. You know we, by listening to all these old classics over the years, we just got more ideas. We've got the horns, and then we got violins. Strings to me just add, they make it sweet, you know? We've matured. We've grown.

You grew up in James Brown's hometown in Georgia right?
Actually, I was born in Augusta, but I really grew up in New York. You know, my mom would let us go back south during the summers, after I turned like uh, maybe 7. You know you start going to school she would let us go back and forth every summer, to spend some time with my father.

Ah so just part time. What kind of impression did that town and James Brown leave on you?
One particular year, we had, went down there one of those summers and James Brown showed up at this small little club. I remember him showing up, I was standing at the bottom of the stage. And I know at the time, my father was still alive, I was about 13. I'm standing there, eye level to the stage, and I remember, James Brown coming on -- he just floated clear across the stage. And I was like, "Look Daddy, he's floating!" [laughter] So years later in New York when these guys [The Dap-Kings] were doing this James Brown, JB's thing and wanted me to come in and sing for them it was right up my alley. That's what got them started with the funk, you know, that was the era of funk we started with.

I don't know if you'll go there for me but, who's your favorite Dap-King?
I don't, my favorite Dap-King? I don't have a favorite. [laugh] I don't have a favorite one, because we're a band, we're like a family, you know? I mean, you know what? Maybe, I don't want to make anyone feel bad, but if it wasn't for this Dap-King I wouldn't be with them. And that's Gabe Roth.

You guys have been collaborating with others in recent years, like Amy Winehouse. How are you feeling about her these days?
Well that whole thing was great I mean that, if you really look at it, it put Daptone on the map, people started noticing. Mark [Ronson, who produced Amy Winehouse's critically acclaimed 2006 record "Back to Black," heavily featuring the Dap-Kings] already knew about us, Amy [Winehouse] too. You know we been out here since the late 90's, and all this stuff that happened in 2005. Whether they admit it we inspired all this new soul stuff. It's all good. They won an award for that, but we'll get ours in our own due time.

Who you looking forward to making music with in the future, any projects in the works?
Whoever wants to come! I mean, look at the, the thing with Michael Bublé. That, that was a big plus with his album and [the song] "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)." Um, David Byrne, you know? I've done something with Booker T. I did something collaborating with him on a couple of songs, that's not out yet. I know I'm missing names. We also did this thing, Night of Too Many Stars with Comedy Central for autism. All these movie stars, and actors, and comedians, doing this show, I was thrilled. I would love to do a movie. Maybe we can do a whole soundtrack of a movie. You never know.

Well you did some sound track work for Denzel Washington's film "The Great Debaters."
Yes I have some songs on that soundtrack. And it sounds great!

How did that come about?
You know that was SXSW. And that particular year I didn't want to do it, lot of young kids, and we got to pay for this and that, the hotel, but it was all worth it. Somebody saw me there and then when Denzel was looking for singer, somebody said, "I know this band with a great singer, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings." They got in touch with my manager and had me sing this song, "I Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl." Denzel saw that and next thing I know he said, "I want her." So that's how I got that, by doing a gig at SXSW.

I love the look of this film you guys did with Phillip Di Fiore, the vintage feel it has, how it invokes old Stax and Blue Note record covers.
Yeah it looks cool. When Phillip brought that idea to us, not everyone got it, you know with the knife, that big knife I have [laughter] but I got it. And everyone looks so good.

You guys don't just have a vintage sound, you live it. And I've seen you all dressed up to go out, you even look like you walked out of the late 60's.
[laughs] Oh yeah I used to go to the vintage stores, buy all my dresses, but I haven't been there in years. I have all that stuff made for me like that now.

I caught you on the "Colbert Report" a few months back and you seemed firmly against modernizing your approach. What do you think about all these kids these days listening to music on phones and shit. You all right with that?
Yeah, I mean, we're doing our own thing but that's all right. That's modern times. That's how a lot of kids are hearing us, so that's all right. But, we're sticking to our own thing.

What about Auto-Tune, would we ever Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings put through Auto-Tune?
[laughs] No, not Daptone, we're not interested.

Over Gabe Roth and Neal Sugarman's dead bodies?
Oh my God, I wouldn't even, I wouldn't even ask. Oh my God. I'd have to go into somebody else's record label and sing with somebody else to be singing Auto-Tune soul [laughter].

If you could live inside of a film, what film would that be?
Oh that's something to think about [laugh]. You know what? I would say this, something that I missed coming up, you made me think -- that film would be -- when they filmed Martin Luther King doing his "I Have a Dream" speech. I wasn't there you know? And I never got a chance to be around 'cause I was young. Just to be near that man, right beside him, while he was doing that speech.
